Hello visitors! My name is Rob Larocco, and I am the creator of the My Med Future app. I wanted to take just a brief moment to introduce myself and share a little bit about my background. You can read about how the idea for the My Med Future app came about in my blog post, so please check it out!
I am and always will view myself, first and foremost, as an educator. When I started college at Central Michigan University in 2001, I knew these things: 1. I liked to make art (and some people told me they thought I was OK at it), 2. I liked to read and write (and I thought I was OK at these), and 3. I wanted to be a teacher (because I had great teachers--and not so great--who significantly impacted my life, and I wanted to be able to do the same for other young people). With this in mind, I set out to become a teacher, and that's just what I did.
I taught high school English (several different courses) and art (also several different courses) for 6 years, and during my 6th year, I made a very tough decision to walk away from the classroom, which is when I began my career as a health professions advisor. Since then, I've worked at multiple universities, both large and small, and in various parts of the country, and I learned a great deal. More importantly, I was still able to do what I had come to love, which is to educate young people.
I still work as a health professions advisor and very much enjoy the work that I do, and the My Med Future app is an extension of my love for educating and advising students, just in a different way. My only goal for the My Med Future app and for this website is for those who use them to find the content provided to be helpful in achieving their goals of becoming healthcare professionals.
In closing, I truly believe that no technology can replace the benefits that come from the one-on-one interactions that academic advisors have with their students. These relationships are crucial to student success. I also understand the reality that many advisors and students face: there simply aren't enough advisors to meet the needs of all of our students, and in some cases, there are no advisors at all. Additionally, understanding and navigating the requirements and processes associated with gaining entry into health professions programs has been and still is incredibly complex for both students and advisors, but I hope the My Med Future app can help to make it a little bit more manageable for everyone.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or suggestions you might have! I can be reached via email at email@example.com.
